YouTube PiP (Picture in Picture) mode is free in the US and you can use it anywhere: Learn the steps



From now on, just visit the Home screen while playing a video on YouTube, and it should automatically switch to picture-in-picture mode. You can then drag the PiP pane to the area of the screen where you want it to stay or double-tap it to go back to the YouTube app.

YouTube has announced that it is now rolling out picture-in-picture support for all iOS users in the United States. The move would allow all iPhone and iPad users in the country to keep watching YouTube videos in a floating window even after closing the app. Once the user no longer wants to watch the video, the pop-up window can be closed by tapping on the small 'X' button at the top-left corner of the mini player. It is worth noting here that YouTube's PiP mode is available to free users only in the United States, while it is still restricted to YouTube Premium subscribers globally. There's no word about when that might change.


To use picture-in-picture in the YouTube iOS app, start watching any video on YouTube and then close the app by swiping upwards from the bottom of the screen. The video will continue to play in a tiny window, letting users browse other apps on the device simultaneously. The floating window can also be moved around and positioned anywhere on the screen according to the user's choice. The YouTube PiP mode is available to all iPhone and iPad devices running at least iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 and higher.

Picture-in-picture mode has its origins on TVs. Thanks to this particular display method, it has been possible for many years to display two video sources simultaneously, such as the HDMI input where your console is connected and the TV antenna input.


In June 2021, YouTube said the feature was making its way to the app for paying customers and that it planned on bringing picture-in-picture to free users as well. At the end of March 2022, YouTube TV announced that it supported picture-in-picture (PiP) mode on both iPhones and iPads running iOS 15 and above.


Picture-in-picture shrinks the video into a small player that you can drag anywhere on your home screen. It is always on the top of other app windows. Thus, you can watch YouTube videos and do other businesses simultaneously.

This will turn on the Picture-in-Picture mode of the video you are playing and it will overflow on top of any other Window. You are free to drag, resize and move the overflow video anywhere on the desktop. You can also use the hover-over play and pause control to resume or pause the video.
